VIPR FAQ

Common questions about which games count, how ratings move, how team strength is calculated, and what comes next for the pilot.

Max change .02

Current maximum rating movement from one game.

Current input W / L

VIPR currently uses wins and losses, not score margin.

Team balance CRF

Partner rating gaps are adjusted in the team calculation.

01

What games played in TV will be entered into VIPR?

Organizers of leagues, groups, tournaments, and other events will decide what rating system, if any, they use and whether they report games.

02

How much can my VIPR change from one game?

The current version of the algorithm allows a maximum change of .02 rating points per game.

03

Do the scores of my games affect my VIPR?

Not at this time. VIPR currently looks only at wins and losses. Score influence may be added in a future version if needed.

04

I'm a snowbird. Will my rating be more volatile when I return after not having played for a few months?

No. VIPR's algorithm does not change based on the length of time since your last game entered into VIPR. Leagues or groups that use VIPR may have their own rules regarding how up to date your rating is.

05

How is the amount of rating change determined in VIPR?

The combined VIPR ratings of the teams are used to estimate each team's probability of winning or losing. If the teams are equally rated, both players on the winning team go up .01 and both players on the losing team go down .01.

06

What if the teams are not equally rated?

When the teams are not equally rated and the higher-rated team wins, their rating goes up less than .01 because they were expected to win. The bigger the difference in combined ratings, the smaller the increase. The losing team goes down by the same amount that the winning team goes up.

07

What happens if the lower-rated team wins?

If the lower-rated team wins, their rating goes up more than .01 because they were not expected to win. The bigger the difference in combined ratings, the bigger the increase, up to the current maximum of .02. The losing team goes down by the same amount that the winning team goes up.

08

What if I am a 4.0 player playing with a 3.0 rated player against two 3.5 rated players?

The simple combined ratings are the same, but the 3.0 player is likely to be targeted and receive a much higher percentage of the balls. VIPR compensates the 3.0 / 4.0 team by applying a CRF, or Combined Rating Factor, equation that gives them a lower team VIPR for that game. With a lower team VIPR, the expectation for them to win is reduced, so their rating goes down less than .01 if they lose and up more than .01 if they win.

09

What's the timeline for VIPR?

This summer, VIPR will be evaluated in TVCPC Summer Ladder Leagues but will not yet be integrated into MyPBGames. Upon successful evaluation, integration into MyPBGames is anticipated to take a couple of months. If all goes well, VIPR leagues could be offered beginning in some 2027 Winter leagues.
